The cultural and artistic roots of František Gross can be found in his birthplace, Nová Paka. Nová Paka was determining for his artistic development, given, among other things, by his friendship with artists and natives of Nová Paka – František Hudeček and Ladislav Zívr. This friendship was crucial, for example, to the organization of their first joint exhibition. This took place in 1931, when the trio of Hudeček, Zívr and Gross voluntarily ended their studies at the School of Applied Arts, so that the artists could follow Chalupecký's thesis of their own, independent path. A joint exhibition in Nová Paka followed, and naturally the formation of the opinions of the entire group of artists, later known as Group 42, took place simultaneously.
