New media art is a broad genre covering art from the 1960s onwards that combines the creative and critical use of contemporary technologies with a new artistic sensibility.

However, the origins of new media art lie in the early 20th-century avant-garde: kinetic art, light sculptures, installations and avant-garde films. These early experiments were continued by artists working in analogue and, later, digital video, as well as multimedia projects using a combination of projection, sound and performance, satellite and telecommunications art, and various forms of computer imagery. Since the 1990s there has been internet art, and artists have worked with virtual reality and experimented with various forms of interactivity, or reworked computer games. In recent years biotechnology and nanotechnology have also been applied in art.
