Landscape – radio map of Jihlava

2. 6. — 27. 8. 2023

IGLOO sound gallery
Komenského 10, Jihlava
curator Miloš Vojtěchovský

The exhibition project Landscape – radio map of Jihlava is inspired by the river, which shapes the landscape around the city and at the same time a poetic element for the gallery installation. The installation in the Igloo gallery consists of a video projection of a sound radio-map, where the viewer can follow the places from where the artist is currently broadcasting, and a video projection documenting the author, walking in the landscape, equipped with mobile technology for live satellite and FM Broadcasting.

The project touches on the situation of the current landscape, poses the question of how are landscapes affected by sound and noise, and goes beyond the space of the gallery, as it takes place both physically and virtually, on the Internet. It is a continuation of previous radio-maps realized by the author during the years in Rio de Janeiro, Porto, Barcelona and elsewhere on the Iberian Peninsula.

The project is based on a specific artistic practice and consists of the art of walking, cartography, sound transmission and the creation of online radiomaps. The author uses special broadcasting equipment – a mobile radiostation, containing equipment for live transmission broadcast via satellite to the map interface and geolocation in the Google Maps application. The content combines interviews of the artist with local residents, recordings of the soundscape around the river and includes broadcasts of available local FM radio stations. Paglieri considers the art of walking as a special cartographic process and the topic of soundscape as a possibility of a community environment of collective drawing and joint modulation of maps.

Since Rodrigo could not physically participate in the installation and will arrive in Jihlava at the end of July, the first part of the exhibition consists of an online broadcast from Porto, where he lives. He undertakes a series of walks around the Duoro River with a radio backpack, carrying an analogue radio, FM antenna and microphone. Listeners can listen to the broadcast in real time at home on the web or in the gallery, and can track the movement of the artist on the map at the same time. The second part of the project will take place in Jihlava and will thus connect the two geographically and culturally distant cities and watersheds.
