The exhibition Dark Night of the Soul presents the work of a group of visual artists, whose work is characterized by increased sensitivity to the current social situation. The exhibit tries to capture the ubiquitous feelings of anxiety, insecurity, and disorientation caused by frustration stemming from the inability to influence the reality of a collapsing world. Feelings that lead us to a state of helplessness and stagnation, which is, however, an integral part of a process that we are not yet able to see from a longer-term perspective. The name of the exhibition also refers to this state. It returns to the phrase that appeared in the sixteenth century in the literary work of the Spanish saint John of the Cross. It captures the state the soul finds itself in when it loses its existing support, the reality ceases to make sense, it is difficult to understand it and find an explanation. However, the soul enters this phase in order to gain new certainties. In this context, contemporary psychology operates with the term psychospiritual crisis. It refers to a transformative process with healing potential caused by a life crisis. Although it can have an external form of mental disorder, it is a stage of a person's personal development, which can lead to a fuller life and firmer health. But do we as a society still have the strength, energy and need to reach this stage?
